Questions about Doggie Style and Mobile Grooming

What are the advantages of using Doggie Style Mobile Washing & Grooming?
  1. We come to you.
  2. Your dog doesn't need to stay in a cage in the grooming shop all day long.
  3. Your pet is groomed in a quiet, stress-free, sanitary, one-on-one environment and builds a relationship with our groomers.
  4. They are not exposed to other animals, thus reducing the chances of catching 'something'.
  5. If your dog is nervous in public situations or is easily distracted, then mobile grooming is for them.
  6. Your dog will be groomed by an experienced groomer with a lot of knowledge of animal behaviour and lots of TLC
  7. Your groomer is only working with your dog, not switching between two or three at a time. No phone, no other barking dogs - only your dog!
  8. It is very convenient and saves you the hassle of planning your day around "drop off" and "pick up times" and driving in heavy traffic.
  9. With ever increasing petrol prices, you save the expense of trips to the in-house groomer.
  10. There is no car sickness, no dirt and "dirty dog smell" on your vehicle's seats, no stress on your pet from sitting in a noisy grooming salon for hours, and no separation anxiety.
  11. It is ideal for busy professionals, busy families, elderly people, and people with disabilities.
  12. You get a very clean dog - we use organic shampoos and a specially designed bathing system. This system makes it possible for the water and shampoo to deep clean your dog's coat and skin.
  13. We can perform most all services provided by in-house groomers as our professionally-built mobile grooming vans contain all the equipment normally found in an grooming salon.

How much do you charge for your service?
We give an estimate of what we believe your pet's grooming will cost. This is a typical pricing guide based on their breed but prices may vary according to their coat condition, temperament, haircut, and time spent during the grooming process. Keep in mind that without actually seeing the dog, its only possible to give you an approximate price. Our prices start as low as Euro59.00

What's included in the price?
Doggie Style is a full service grooming company. We nicknamed what we do as The 6 Steps to Doggie Style - 1. Health Check, 2. Brush, Comb & Light De-matting, 3. Warm Therapeutic Bath, 4. Fluff or Towel Dry, 5. Nail Trim & Ear Clean and 6. Haircuts or Shavedowns. Each step encompasses a range of activities that guarantee your dog will receive a full professional groom. You will not have to pay for any 'Add-Ons' to ensure that your dog is completely groomed as we don't believe in price gimmicks. Go to the 'Services'->'6 Steps to Doggie Style' button on the left navigation bar to learn more about The 6 Steps to Doggie Style and what's included in the price.

Do you give discounts if I have more than one dog?
If you have more than one dog, we will reduce the cost of the additional dogs by 10%.

Why does mobile grooming cost more than a location based salon?
Fewer pets are groomed in a day, and so, each pet receives the highest quality one on one professional care, in a comfortable stress-free environment, without the distractions typically found in a shop setting. We come to your door with a self-contained grooming salon which saves save you the travelling time/costs and the wear and tear on your car. We have your pet in and out with no caging, distractions, or exposure to other animals plus all the benefits listed in the first FAQ question.

Why does your dog's haircut cost more than yours?
A few reasons:
  1. Fleas!!
  2. Your haircut usually only takes 15-20 minutes. Your dog's takes longer.
  3. Your hairdresser doesn't give you a manicure, pedicure and clean out your ears.
  4. Your hairdresser only clips your head.
  5. Your hairdresser doesn't have to de-mat your hair.
  6. You don't try to bite your hairdresser.
  7. You don't wiggle, jump and shake while being worked on with sharp scissors & tools.
  8. You don't cock your leg on the table/cages.
  9. Anal glands... your hairdresser probably doesn't even know what they are.
  10. Your hairdresser would never wash your bum.
  11. Your hairdresser doesn't have to hold you up with one hand while scissoring with the other.
  12. You don't lick your hairdressers face while they're doing your hair.
  13. You don't come in with mud, burrs, sticks, tar, sap, gum, grass seeds & nettles in your hair.
  14. Drying your hair doesn't create a cloud of fuzzy floating hair that takes ages to clean up.
  15. You don't shake and cover everything (including your hairdresser) in 2 inches of soapy water.
  16. Your hairdresser doesn't treat skin problems.
  17. Your hairdresser doesn't try to hide your body flaws with creative grooming.
  18. Your hairdresser doesn't have to shave between your toes.
  19. Asking your hairdresser to shave your bum & bits etc... will get you slapped!

Are you a franchise?
Doggie Style is a 100% Irish company. We are not a franchise and we are not affiliated with any other company. We called on the combined doggie style team's 20 years of experience and months of research to design and build our service with you and your dog's needs in mind. By putting the effort in ourselves, and not just buying into a franchise, we are able to keep our costs lower and so we can offer our customers the best full service for a very reasonable price.

What style of cut will you give my dog?
We offer breed-specific cuts for every dog but if you would like another style, maybe a short easy-care cut, just let your groomer know and we can do it for you.

Can you diagnose health problems in my dog?
As part of our standard service, our experienced groomers will perform an external health check on your dog. They will check the dog's skin and hair condition for problems and can advise you on any action you should take. They will also check for ticks, fleas, infected wounds, rashes, warts, lumps and a range of other external problems that had been previously undetected. Regular professional grooming is very proactive way to ensure that your dog receives prompt veterinary care before a problem becomes severe. I you are concerned about any symptoms your dog may have, by all means, discuss them with our groomers, but the best course of action is, as always, to consult your vet.

How long will the grooming take?
Mobile grooming has the benefit of offering an express service for you and your pet. The service is provided straight through, one pet at a time. With this method, dogs are typically finished in about an hour to an hour and a half, depending on the size of the dog, condition and thickness of the coat, temperament and any additional services required or requested.

Do you groom large and small dogs?
Yes! As long as the dog (if it is large) is freely able to walk onto the table and from the table to the hydrobath.

Do you offer the 'FURminator' de-sheding service?
Yes we do. We are an authorised FURminator grooming organisation. You can contact us to learn more about it or go to www.FURminator.com to find out more about this amazing service.

If I bathe my pet myself, will you reduce the price of the groom?
We do not offer an a la carte service. It is a package deal that comes with the 6 Steps to Doggie Style. (For more on the 6 Steps to Doggie Style, go to the 'Services'->'6 Steps to Doggie Style' button on the left navigation bar.) We prefer to bathe the pet ourselves to ensure that the pet is cleaned to our standards. A hair cut will be of lesser quality if the pet is not thoroughly cleaned. It also gives us the chance to really look at the pet's skin and hair condition. We may uncover ticks, fleas, infected wounds, rashes, warts, lumps or other previously unknown issues. Regular professional grooming is very proactive in ensuring that a pet receives prompt veterinary care before a problem becomes severe.

Do you offer Handstripping?
Handstripping is an extra service we provide if it is booked in advance and we have enough time available to do it. Contact us for prices.

Can I see inside your mobile grooming van?
Yes! If you would like to take a tour of the van before or after grooming, you are more than welcome to do so and all of the equipment will be explained to you if you so wish. Unfortunately, for liability and insurance reasons, you will not be allowed to step into the vehicle or stay with your pet.

Can I watch or maybe help you groom my dog?
Every groomer will tell you that when the owner is present, a dog's behaviour is likely to deteriorate or they can even become confrontational with a groomer. Therefore, if your dog shows any signs of problems because of your presence, we must ask you to allow us to be alone with your pet. We also want your dog to get to know our groomers so that they can develop a relationship to ensure that the grooming procedure is an enjoyable one.

Do you groom cats?
No, we do not currently groom cats.

Do you use warm water?
Yes, we have enough fresh heated (and cold) water on board to groom more than all of the dogs we groom each day.

Do you use fresh water for each dog?
Yes, two tanks in our Hydro-Baths (one for washing and one for rinsing) are filled with fresh warm water for each new dog that enters our mobile grooming vans and then rinsed and cleaned after the washing is complete.

How much notice should I give you if I want my dog groomed?
During busy periods we can be booked up for between one and two months and so to guarantee your booking, you should call well in advance of your desired date. This is why we encourage people to re-book appointments during a visit from our groomers or schedule a recurring appointment. We do however have cancellations from time to time and we may be able to fit you in at short notice.

Do you have waiting list?
Yes, if the dates you require are not available due to us being booked up, you can go on a waiting list and we'll call you if anyone cancels an appointment. It is advisable to make a provisional booking for the next available date that is suitable to you as well as going on our waiting list as cancellations are not very common.

Can I schedule recurring appointments?
Yes, in fact, we encourage this. This way you can always count on us being at your home or office at the same time on a specific day of the week. We book appointments far in advance for most of our customers, and it is usually best to confirm your next appointment after grooming is complete.

Do you send me a reminder before my dogs grooming session?
We endeavour to send you a reminder by text message before the appointment is due.

What do I do if I need to cancel an appointment?
If, for whatever reason, you need to cancel an appointment, please let us know, by calling or emailing us, as soon as possible. Please try to ensure that cancellations are received by us at least 48 hours before the appointment is due or we may have to impose a cancellation payment on you.

Do you clean dog's teeth?
Yes, if you request that we clean your dog's teeth, we do a thorough cleaning using toothbrushes that are specifically designed, and flavoured, for dogs.

What if my dog's teeth are really in bad shape?
If there are any gum problems, loose teeth, you will be referred to your vet.

How does mobile grooming work?
Mobile grooming is just like salon grooming, except the salon comes to you. We have all the amenities you'd expect to find in a location based salon: bathtub with hot and cold running water, dryers, clippers, grooming table etc.

Do you need to connect to water and electricity?
Our vans already have more than enough warm and cold water to groom all of the dogs we visit in a day. We only need to have access to an electrical outlet to be able to run the clipper and dryer. These appliances are normal voltage and will not overload your circuit breaker.

Do you drain the bath water at my location?
The bath water is pumped into a 'Grey Water' storage tank in our vans for draining later.

What happens if you can't get access to a power outlet?
All of our vans have onboard electrical generators that can be used when necessary but due to the noise distractions for your dog, we prefer to use an electrical outlet.

How often are the grooming vans cleaned?
All grooming tools and surface areas are cleaned and sterilized after each use. We use disinfectants recommended by veterinarians that kill both bacteria and viruses.

What times are you available to groom my dog?
Our groomers are available to pamper your dog 7 days a week from 8am until 8pm.

What areas do you operate in?
We currently groom dogs in the greater Dublin area, North Wicklow, Kildare, Meath and Louth.

Will you accept an after-hours appointment?
To meet the demand for after-hours appointments we now work evenings and Sundays so that our customers have more flexibility. We do, however, add a small additional charge for these appointments.

What payment methods do you accept?
Payment is due by cash or cheques. At the moment we don't have the facility to accept Laser or Credit Cards

What experience do your groomers have?
The members of Doggie Style Team have had varying levels of experience from trainees accompanying other groomers to 20 years of practical experience. All of our groomers are required to be memebers of the Irish Professional Groomers Association. You can have a look at the 'Our Team' page for the profiles of our current groomers.

Will you groom a puppy?
It is recommended that puppies have had their second set of booster shots before their first appointment. Our groomers take a few extra steps with puppies to familirise them with the grooming process and to make it an enjoyable process so that it is something the look forward to.

Do I have to be at home when you groom my dog?
First time clients must be home for the appointment so that we may meet you and answer any questions you may have. At that time, we can discuss your grooming preferences. After the initial visit, you do not need to be home as long as we can gain access to your dog.

Is there anything I can do to help you with grooming my dog?
Yes, there are a number of things you can do to aid us in our visit.
  1. Please allow your pet to go out and "do their business" before we arrive.
  2. If possible, please do not feed your pet within an hour before we arrive as treats may be use to gain the dogs friendship and confidence.
  3. Try to ensure that there is sufficient access and parking for our van.
  4. If you live in a gated community, please notify any security prior to the appointment.

Do you use sedatives or any other drugs to alter my dog's behaviour?
No, never. We only use the best method of all - experience, patience and lots of one-on-one TLC. If we feel that sedation is required for such reasons as the dog's behaviour or because they have severe matting, we will refer you to your vet. They will have the proper equipment and knowledge to properly monitor your dog's breathing and heart rate under sedation

Do you give an exact appointment time?
Yes, we do give you an appointment time but this, on occasion, may have to change slightly on the day. We plan our groomer's day so that they have spare time for each grooming session. If an appointment prior to yours takes a lot longer than expected, due to the fact that we want to give each dog the time and attention it requires, or there may have been unforeseen events occur like traffic delays or inclement weather, someone will contact you if the delay is going to be greater than 15mins

If I call for an appointment, will I get a voice mail?
Chances are, if you call you may get a voice mail and we do apologise for that. Due to the nature of the job, we may not always be free to answer the phone. Mobile grooming is an express service which allows our groomers only 1-2 hrs to groom each pet. Also, if we are driving in the van and you call, we can't always answer because of legal & safety reasons. We will return all messages as soon as possible. If you call the office during the weekend, we will return your call on Monday. The best method of making a booking is to request the booking online and be in with a chance of winning the grooming session for free.

Questions about Doggie Style and Mobile Grooming

How often should I have my pet professionally groomed?
Their coat type and daily activities are just a couple of the things that determine how often they should be groomed. A short-haired dog may only need a full grooming a few times per year, but a pet with medium or long hair, that needs to be regularly trimmed, will need grooming every two to four weeks. To reduce shedding on any pet, we recommend setting up a maintenance grooming schedule of at least every four to six weeks. With regular grooming, your pet's coat will stay in good shape, shedding is reduced, fleas and ticks and other external health problems can be better controlled and your pet will just look and feel better. We can recommend how often your pet should be groomed at the completion of your first appointment.

How often should I brush my pet?
It depends on the type of hair involved. Regular brushing helps to de-shed as well as bring out the natural oils in a pet to keep the skin and coat shiny and healthy. It promotes the re-growth of new hair. A short-haired dog may only need brushing once a week, but a dog with medium to long hair that needs regular trimming will need brushing and combing every one to two days to keep mats from forming. Brushing, using a slicker brush or pin brush, will usually only get the hair that lies on top of the coat. It may not get the hair that lies closer to the skin. A comb will also get the hair close to the skin. Very often, people who do brush their dogs don't also comb them, so mats will form close to the skin and the owners will not realize it. Combing a dog will very easily let you know if you have missed any mats. Once a mat has formed, it can be difficult to remove it and they can grow very quickly and will eventually need to be professionally shaved off. Please speak to your groomer about proper brushing, combing techniques, and tools.

My pet doesn't like it when I brush them, what can I do?
Very often, owners will stop brushing if their pet shows any sign of discomfort or dislike to the brushing. The pet will quickly connect their wiggling or screaming or biting to their owners not brushing. It becomes a regular, bad habit of the pet, so the owner will stop brushing the dog altogether. That makes it very difficult for your groomer to work with the dog if it has already made a habit of not wanting to be brushed. The best thing to do when your pet doesn't want to be brushed is to Keep Brushing. If you are not hurting the dog, it will eventually realize that fighting you will not get it anywhere. Regular brushing is a requirement to keep the coat clean and mat free.

What is a mat?
A mat is a tangle of hair or fur that can be found anywhere on a pet that has not been brushed and combed regularly. The matting process is speeded up when the pet gets wet from a bath or being out in the elements and is allowed to air dry without being brushed. A pet should be fully brushed and combed prior to and after any bath or circumstance where the pet could get wet at all. A longhaired pet should also be hand dried while being brushed and combed after getting wet, to reduce the possibility of matting.

Can a mat cause problems for my dog?
Those of you with delicate stomachs may need to grab a bucket for the rest of this but you need to know what the consequences of not attending to a matted dog are. When a mat is left on the pet for a long period of time, it begins to grow (collect more tangled hair) and pull at the skin, eventually ripping itself away from the skin. The skin underneath the mat cannot breathe and will retain moisture and bacteria. Raw spots (hotspots) can form under mats; abscessed open wounds, mould, and maggots can also reside underneath a mat.

Will grooming reduce the amount of hair that my dog sheds?
Regular grooming by you in conjunction with professional grooming sessions will definitely reduce shedding. Brushing, combing and blow-drying will remove a lot of loose hair and thus reduce the amount that they will shed in your home. In addition to our normal service, we also offer 'The FURminator', a special de-shedding program. You can contact us to learn more about it or go to www.FURminator.com to find out more about this amazing service.

If I want to bathe my pet myself in between professional grooming appointments, how often should it be?
We leave this up to the owner's discretion, but remember that over-bathing a pet can cause drying of the hair and skin if you don't use specialised grooming shampoos and conditioners. Typically, a pet may only need one bathe in between professional grooming sessions. Be sure to brush and comb the pet before the bath to remove any mats and after the bath while you are actively drying your pet. Do not let a medium or longhaired dog air dry. As soon at they roll around, mats will begin to reform in the wet hair. See the questions on mats for more information.

What are anal glands and why do they need to be expressed?
Anal sacs or glands are two small internal glands that sit on either side of the dog's anus. Many dogs will secrete the sacs on their own when they defecate. Some dogs are not able to secrete them on their own and require someone to do it for them. Signs that your dog cannot secrete their glands are scooting on the floor or constant licking around their anus. Anal gland expression is not available with every groomer. Some do not prefer to offer the service and advise a visit to the vet's to have it done. The vet's internal method of expression may be more thorough than a groomer's external method, but both are successful options. If you need gland expression done for your dog, ask your groomer.

How often should I have my pet's nails trimmed?
If your pet is regularly walked on cement sidewalks or pavement, nail trimming may not even be a requirement. The pavement will often file the nails for you. Be sure to check the nails once in a while so you know if the pavement is filing them down adequately. For dogs who are not walked on pavement, nails should be trimmed every three to six weeks. If the nails are left to grow, they will begin to twist the toes making walking uncomfortable, even painful. Some nails, especially the dewclaw (thumbs on pets) will curl around and stick themselves into the pads, causing bleeding and infections. Long nails are especially difficult to cut because the quick, or blood vessel grows with the nail and makes the groomer unable to clip the nail short. When a nail is trimmed, the quick recedes to protect itself from exposure. Short term weekly nail trimming might be required to get the nail back to being short again. If your groomer is unable to trim the nails due to a pet's difficult behaviour, you may need to have the nails done at your vet's office.

My dog's coat is long and severely matted. Can a professional groomer get out the mats and comb out the coat?
That depends. In the event that you dog is matted when we arrive and examine them, we will discuss the options with you and arrive at an agreeable solution. Removing minor matting is part of our service but if the coat is badly matted, it may be more practical, cost effective, and easier on your dog to give it a short haircut which will remove the mats and get the coat in good shape. Unfortunately, we will have to charge you extra if we need to work on a dog with a badly matted coat as it can add a lot of time to a groom. If your dog is extremely matted our groomers may recommend that you consult your vet to remove them as it may be too traumatic on the dog for them to be removed without sedation. Regular maintenance will prevent this problem from reoccurring.

My dog's coat is dull; he sheds a lot and scratches all the time? Will grooming help with these problems?
Regular grooming will greatly help with these problems, but the pet's diet and allergies may also be contributing to these situations. We may recommend giving your dog a dietary supplement in addition to a regular maintenance program. Use of supplements has proven to help with these and many other problems.
